When to sow pole beans
- Sow from about 1 week after your last expected frost until about 11 weeks before the first expected autumn frost.
Direct sow after frost — cold soil rots seed before it germinates.Sow two or three seeds at the base of each pole or trellis string.Thin to the strongest seedling once true leaves appear.
Train the vines — guide young shoots onto their support early on.Water deeply and consistently, especially once flowering begins.Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pick often — regular picking is what keeps vines producing pods.Harvest pods young and snappy, before seeds swell and toughen.Check daily during peak season; hidden pods hide under the leaves.
